Welcome

to The Smug Mum

Do you ever feel like you’re whitewater rafting while everyone else is splashing around at a waterpark?

Welcome to my world! In the imperfect, frustrating and downright scream-worthy moments (of which there are plenty) I try to remember that perspective is everything and that someone once saw me smile, heard me laugh and said '“you’re such a smug mum!’

Smug Mum was meant as an insult but I now see it as high praise - it means that somehow I’m finding the upside of the downs, rising to the challenges, and being the best damn parent I can be.

The Smug Mum isn’t a parenting guide, because every family and situation is unique. There’s no judgement because we’re all doing our best.

The Smug Mum is a companion, sharing the joy and drama of real-life parenting, and what we’ve learned along the way, because the obstacles are part of the adventure.

Let’s Talk About

Sex

‘The birds and the bees’ is just the first conversation but if that conversation starts without you it can get very complicated. I thought functional naming, factual explanations and open conversations would make life much easier. But the person who said there’s no such thing as a bad idea obviously didn't have my children.

A child wearing a red hat and green top is sitting alone under an umbrella on a rocky beach. The sun is shining and the child is looking out to sea.

A Little Bit Of

Neglect

Have you ever followed a recipe to the letter only for it to go horribly wrong? Or thrown a few odds and ends from the fridge together in an emergency and ended up with the tastiest dish?

The best meals don’t always come from the fanciest kitchens or by sticking to the recipe, and the same is true with children..

Happy healthy children are made from love, support and encouragement, but if they’re getting a bit salty try adding a splash of neglect*!
